The rational government paid a special attention to the Omani camels and their owners, trainers and fans. They received
tangible care and encouragement in the era of the modern renaissance of the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin
Saeed- may Allah rest his soul. Such encouragement was translated into the establishment of the Camel Service
Department in 1972 under the Royal Stables. In 1977, it participated in the celebration of the seventh national day, in the race that was held in Halban, and in 1983, Al Khoudh area was chosen to be the center of the camel being more suitable. In 1985, camels participated in the 15th National Day celebrations in Al-Fateh Track, and in 1988, the Camel Services Department organized the great camels walk from the Royal Stables in Sib along with the Royal Stables in Salalah with the participation of 30 camels.
In 1989, a decision was issued to establish the General Directorate of Camel Affairs as an independent administrative unit of the Diwan of Royal Court. In 1992, the Directorate moved to its new location in Al-Fulaij in the Wilayat Barka and the first track of camel racing belonging to the Directorate consisting of the main stage and a 7-km track was constructed. In 1993, the first official race was held under the auspices of the late, His Highness Sayyid Thuwaini bin Shihab Al Said, the personal representative of His Majesty the Sultan. In 2002, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said- may Allah rest his soul ordered to hold the annual festival for private camel races and other contests in the festival, such as Dance, Beauty and Milking contests in various governorates of the Sultanate. In 2006, the first cup in the name of the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Saeed- may Allah rest his soul- was awarded for the winning camel, which was Al-Zahia, of the Royal Camel Corps, trained by Salim bin Ali Al-Mushaifri.
Oman Camel Racing Federation is an evidence of the generous care of the late Sultan for camel owners and fans
The Royal Camel Corps affiliated to the Royal Court Affairs is considered one of the largest and most important institutions that enhances the camel sector annually through holding of the annual festivals for private camel races as well as the estimation of quotations for the purchase of the Omani strains in order to preserve them and support owners and trainers. The Royal Camel Corps participates in camels parades in various national and heritage events in Oman; these camels are trained by Omani trainers.
